Whereas
many better-off households have a maid coming in during
certain times of the day, few homes here in the USA have
permanent live-in-staff. You can see that from the way,
even large houses are built here. Usually they are
without permanent staff quarters and only in the rarest
cases with an "upstairs-downstairs" kitchen
arrangement. Having looked at, and visited, many up-scale
homes across the country, it is always amazing to find,
that the staff does not even have their own staff room,
where they spend their time between calls, and after they
have completed the work of cleaning and bringing order to
the house! In other words, few, even very large houses
are build to accommodate permanent or live-in-staff.
| Nevertheless,
an increasing number of people have staff and
even economic downturns, have changed little on
that. Salaries for household staff in the USA and
Canada are, relatively speaking, and compared to
other areas in the world like Europe and Asia,
very high. This is one reason which attracts
household employees from many other parts of the
world. Although, authorities, and job
descriptions vary widely, we have put together
definitions of commonly found household staff
members based on information from various
recruiters and the Department of Labor.

They should give you an idea of what kind
of jobs are available.
Pay and
conditions vary greatly across the country (USA and less
so, Canada). Salaries quoted for some of the jobs by
recruiters in California and New York almost defy belief
and are also at variance with the statistics of the
Department of Labor. However, while we are trying to
reflect a true picture, or at least as close as one can
get it, it has to be on the person looking for a job to
verify what kind of salaries are paid, where and for what
kind of job description.
| Common
Household Staff Positions |
| Estate
Manager |
He/She is
the head of an owners multiple households
or residential estates. A sort of CEO of
the owner’s property or multiple residences.
It is a high level position the requires
excellent organizational, financial and human
resource skills. Apart from managing the
other household staff, the incumbent has
to be able to deal with suppliers
and subcontractors. Few owners
will have the time, or the inclination to create
and hand over well organized homes. It is
therefore the Estate Manager to create
smooth running households and to
create sensible budgets for that.
Salaries can be anywhere from $40,000 to
$150,000. This is often a live-in
position at the main residence. Normal
is a 40-60 hrs week, but often this is a 24hr
day/7 day/week/365 a year job. |
The
minimum requirement is probably a
- good business or
accounting degree plus some years of
experience in either hotel management or
the management of a household;
- Outstanding formal
appearance and formal
social contact skills;
- Good personnel
management and training skills;
- Good budgeting and
financial control skills
- If the owner has
residences abroad, then foreign
experience (having lived and
worked abroad!) is essential and
- solid fluent
foreign language skills are required

| House
Manager or House Keeper |
The
house- or household managers manages a single
property. He/she manages all the staff
and the budget for that property. If
there are multiple properties each house
manager will report to the Estate Manager. With
a single property owner you usually report
directly to the owners.
Salaries can be anywhere from $36,000 to $80,000.
This is sometimes a live-in position at
the residence. Normal is a 40-60 hrs
week, but often this is a 24hr day/7 day/week/365
a year job. |
The
minimum requirement is probably a
- good business or
accounting degree plus one/two years of
experience in either hotel management or
as a junior in the management of a
household;
- Outstanding formal
appearance and formal
social contact skills;
- Good personnel
management and training skills;
- Good budgeting and
financial control skills;
- computer literate

| Butler
(Under-butler or Houseman for
junior positions in the USA) |
Butlers
can be employed at private households
as well as 4 and 5 star hotels, though the
latter's functions are slightly different from
those of the domestic butler.
In some large households, they are often
responsible for efficiently running and
supervising the specific needs of a formal or
multi-staffed household, thus assuming also the
House Manager job.
Additionally, in a good and proper household,
while the relationship to the Butler is formal,
he will also act as Executive Assistant.
with a Butler providing distinctive,
“hands-on” involvement. A Butler
typically oversees the household staff usually of
one residence and anticipates the needs of the
employer. The Butler usually lives in.
Butler’s salaries range from $40,000 to
$130,000 (live out) plus benefits.
Salary is based on experience and the duties and
hours listed in the job description. |
In some
places the butler is only in charge of the dining
room, wine cellar (a most important
part!), and the pantry (valuable
silver, table linen and China) . Many are in
charge of the entire "parlour floor"
(all the reception and day rooms), while the
housekeeper cares for the bedrooms, the rest of
the entire house and its appearance.
Today, many butlers in the USA, complete a
university degree before they enter a special
training school for butlers. In the UK, this is
less often the case with some of the best butlers
still working their way up in large houses.
Butlers are always male. They should have a high
level of general education. In addition, to a good
social education and a complete command of social
etiquette, they should also have
- good business and
accounting, budgeting and financial
control sense gained through education
and experience
- Outstanding formal
appearance and formal
social contact skills;
- Good personnel
management and training skills;
- Today they have to be
computer literate
For
contrast and as an international
comparison, a Butler at Balliol College,
a highly prestigious job at one of the 37
Colleges of Oxford University, in the UK, has
recently been advertised for Pounds 19,000-24,000
(US$ 30,000 - 40,000 - 2010). This was not a
live-in position!
A
live-in position with an aristocratic family in
the South of France (2014) was advertised for the
equivalent of Euro 100,000 a year plus free
accommodation and food. A car is also provided.

| Personal
and Executive Assistants |
Personal
Assistants are responsible for
working in the employer's home in the management
of household, personal and professional needs.
Personal Assistant’s salaries range from
$50,000 - $85,000 plus benefits. The hourly pay
range is from $18-$25 per hour. Salaries are
based on experience and the number of hours and
duties listed in the job description.
EXECUTIVE ASSISTANTS
Executive Assistants provide key administrative
support for an executive, managing their daily
schedule and handling multiple activities.
Executive Assistant’s salaries range from
$50,000 - $95,000 plus benefits. The hourly pay
range is from $18-$35 per hour. Salaries are
based on experience and the number of hours and
duties listed in the job description. |
Most jobs
will require a bachelors degree and good
fault free English language skills. If
you work internationally, a state recognized commercial
apprenticeship is probably a lot more
use than a degree.
Besides the obvious administrative skills, you
have to be socially skilled, know how to eat
properly, know your wine, your geography, and
your food. Being a vegetarian or some other
"oddity" will not help in this job.
You have to be computer literate and considerable
bookkeeping skills are frequently required. Some
of the duties may include:
- Handling personal
bills of your employer
- Making travel
arrangements, and sometimes traveling
with the employer.
- Serving as office
assistant, handling correspondence,
creating inventories, organizing the
personal office and, if you work for a
celebrity, handling media inquiries.
- Planning special
events and parties
- Managing
construction projects or home
improvements.
- Scheduling of
staff and maintenance personnel.
- Coordinating
personal schedules and daily activities
- Running business
and personal errands
- Maintaining
social and philanthropic activities.
Here
in the USA, personal and executive assistants are
rarely required to speak, or be able to write in
another language than English. Internationally
you should at the very least
be able to offer three of the following:
English, French, German/Russian/Spanish/ Arabic.

| Cook/Chef |
Having a cook
or personal chef is a valuable
asset if you are a busy family. They should
manage the kitchen for the owners family, but
also for the staff, if a staff dining room is
available. Some cooks have been trained in good
large restaurants, others come from large houses.
The best chefs available come from
Europe, having been trained in solid
apprenticeships, rather than culinary
schools. Though, if you can find them, there are
good chefs in the USA.
Sometimes a good maid is also able to provide
decent meals using fresh ingredients.
Chef Salaries range from $40,000 - $100,000 plus
benefits. The hourly pay range is from $30-$50
per hour. That is considerably more then a Chef
can earn in a top level restaurant. |
The level
of sophistication required in the kitchen and the
wine cellar of a large house is a reflection
of the education level and sophistication
of its owner. Some people live in large
houses having an abundance of staff, yet they
still prefer fast food rather than good and
nutritious home cooking.

| Maid |
The
maid is probably the one domestic employee people
have most often contact with. It is the most
common household employee and probably one of the
most important one. The maid will handle
most of your household valuables from your silver
to your China or your clothes if she also does
the laundry in your house.
A maid will earn anywhere between $ 18,000 and
$30,000 a year (40 hour/5 day week). |
There is
no formal education for being a maid. However, some
training in a large house might be valuable.
Knowing how to care for your clothes, how to
clean your silver and not to put your most
valuable China in the dishwasher might be things
one has to learn. Many of the best and
most reliable maids in the USA these days come
from Central America or Mexico.
To do things right, the employer will have to use
a salary/tax service to account properly for the
payments to the maid. |
| Gardner/
Groundkeepers |
If you
have significant land around your
house/estate (3+ acres), you probably need a
Gardner or groundskeeper. He/she will
also look after the pool and the tennis court. Unless
you have French or English style manicured
gardens, there is probably not enough work for a
full time job with less than five acres
and a greenhouse.
A Gardner/groundkeeper will earn anywhere between
$ 18,000 and $40,000 a year (40 hour/5 day week).
His salary will depend on experience and on his
knowledge about plants and gardens. |
If you do
not want your Gardner simply going to
"Lowe's" or "Home Depot" and
buy the plants they sell, you would want
a trained Gardner. Nothing against them
or their products, they generally sell value for
money. But if you go to the non inconsiderable
expense of employing a Gardner, acquiring al;l
the right tools and maybe having a proper
greenhouse, you want your garden to look
different and good all year round! You might
consider having the garden designed by a
landscape specialist and then worked on by your
Gardner. But again, be careful about the
training of these specialists! |
| Couples |
Couples
are two individuals working as a team to provide
domestic and personal services as needed for the
care of your home and family. The skills they
offer can be: Household Manager and Chef,
Housekeeper and Handyman / Cook / Groundskeeper,
Butler and Chef, or Chef and Housekeeper. Couples'
salary range from $60,000 to as high as $150,000,
plus benefits for the pair. Living arrangements
are usually on site but in a separate house or,
less common, off-site.

The problem
with couples is always what happens if
one of them does not work out to your
satisfaction. Having experienced that repeatedly
in France as well as here in the USA, we can
assure you, it is a rather messy entanglement.
If, on the other hand you find a qualified,
honest and hardworking couple treasure
them! They are not easy to find! |

Salaries
like job requirements and training for these jobs
vary widely and exact data for salaries is
difficult to come by. There is also a marked
difference between New York, California, the
Seattle Area, some parts of Texas and the rest of
the USA |
Job descriptions, especially for domestic
employees are an important issue. There are probably more
unhappy working relationships between employers and
domestic employees, because of vague definitions and
assignments of duties, than for any other reason. If you
are an employer, spend some time on clearly defining,
what you expect from a domestic employee. If necessary,
use the help of your recruiter. Because, he will be
unhappy as well, if he has to repeatedly replace an
employee for free!
